A story from A fan
I wasn't familiar with Patrick Stewart before I started watching Next Generation. I had seen the 1984 Dune, but I certainly didn't remember that he had been in it. But once I started watching TNG, he quickly became one of my favorite parts of the show (as I'm sure he was for many fans).
I had also read the X-Men comics some in the early 80s, and I remember thinking that if they ever made a movie, he would be perfect as Professor X -- and damned if they didn't do just that!
I saw the first 3 TNG movies in theaters, but I'm a bit ashamed to say that my passion for and interest in TNG faded some as time passed once the show ended, so I didn't see Nemesis until a while after it had left theaters. Again, as I imagine many fans were, I was disappointed with it.
But I've enjoyed many of the other projects that Sir Patrick did, like the TV movies he made in the 90s, and his voice acting on American Dad. I enjoyed the Picard series, as uneven as it was. I was so sad to hear of his passing, and I will certainly miss seeing him in more things. I hope I'll get a chance to see Doomsday in the theater, since that will likely be his final onscreen performance.
